01. Hanwha Science Challenge
Since 2011, we have proudly sponsored the Hanwha Science Challenge, South Korea’s largest high
school science competition, dedicated to identifying and nurturing exceptional students in the
field of science. This initiative provides students with invaluable opportunities to pursue
their scientific passions, serving as a platform to explore and engage in challenging scientific
endeavors. The competition not only encourages participants to dream big and embrace challenges
but also provides inspiration for future science leaders. Open to high school students and
teachers with a keen interest and talent in science, the event fosters teamwork and
collaboration. With a focus on the theme of “Saving the Earth” and envisioning a sustainable
future, we urge students to delve into the science behind pressing global environmental issues,
such as sustainable energy, disease prevention, famine relief, climate change, and water
scarcity. Finalists receive exclusive benefits, such as exemption from credential screening when
applying for positions at Hanwha Group. Winners of each year’s challenge are awarded top
national scholarships and the opportunity to take overseas trips to leading engineering
colleges, scientific institutions, or Hanwha’s global business sites to gain new perspectives on
the subjects they are studying.
02. Hanwha-KAIST Science Outreach Program
In 2016, we launched the Science Outreach Program with the Korea Advanced Institute of Science
and Technology (KAIST), aimed at nurturing the scientific talents of middle school students.
This initiative is designed to support and cultivate the skills and aspirations of students in
science and engineering. Partnering with KAIST, our program offers mentorship and online and
offline science, math, coding, and software development classes to middle school students in
Daejeon, South Korea. Additionally, we organize field programs, including cultural experiences
and site visits, to enrich their learning and broaden their horizons. We strive to empower the
next generation of scientists and engineers, fostering a passion for learning and innovation.
03. Hanwha-KAIST Spacekids
In 2022, Hanwha Space Hub, in partnership with KAIST, launched Spacekids, a South Korean
adaptation of NASA's STEM Engagement program. Designed to cultivate talent for leadership in the
aerospace field, Spacekids is an immersive space education initiative for middle school students
centered around the theme of “science plus humanities.” The flagship Space Mission Project
program integrates science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) tailored
specifically for middle schoolers. In addition, a two-month Space Humanities Conference course
develops student creativity and imagination. Leading these courses are Professor Sang Wook Kim
of the Department of Physics at Kyunghee University, Professor Jae-seung Jeong of the Department
of Bio and Brain Engineering at KAIST, and Professor Paul Yun, a NASA Solar System Ambassador. A
total of 30 middle school students were selected as the first class of Spacekids after
screenings and interviews by the KAIST faculty, and the second class will be expanded to educate
45 students. Upon completing the six-month training program, students receive various benefits,
including a certificate from the president of KAIST, access to the KAIST Center for Gifted
Education, and one-on-one expert career counseling. Following the year-end performance
presentation and completion ceremony, we also offer opportunities for overseas scientific
expeditions.
